don't depend on your agent

If you are not working as much as you think you should then maybe it’s time to start working for yourself and stop waiting for your agent to call with an audition. Some might say, ‘isn’t that what agents are for?’ Well, the answer is yes and no.

Unless you are the only client your agent represents, they can not spend all their time on you alone. Most agents work really hard to get audition appointments but sometimes things fall through the cracks. It is up to you to keep your ear to the ground so to speak, and know what projects are coming that you may be right for. If a friend tells you about an audition they had and you feel you may also be right for it, call your agent and ask if they submitted you. Never take it for granted that they did because there is a chance they didn’t. This happens more than you think.

Casting websites like Casting Networks and Actors Access are great tools for actors, singers, dancers, and voice over artists to use as a way of knowing what jobs are out there. Agents will sometimes put you in a box by submitting you for the same types of roles all the time but you know yourself better than anyone and you might be missing opportunities! Self submissions are a great way to get you on the radar of casting directors that may not have ever received audition requests from your agent. There are alot of artists being cast from these sites by submitting themselves so get out there and work for yourself. It gives you twice as many chances to book your next gig.

Instead of posting pictures of what you ate today, use your social media accounts to promote your talents. Create a website or a blog. Attend masterclasses, webinars, and classes by casting directors to find out what they are looking for to increase your chances of being cast. Go after what you want and stop leaving your fate in the hands of your agent. Never stop working for yourself!
