If you had a choice between being famous or being successful, which would you choose? Some might say, ‘Aren’t they the same?’ The answer is NO.

Being a household name or having thousands or even millions of followers on social media may make you famous but you’d be surprised at how many people with those attributes are struggling to pay bills or drowning in debt. The thirst for fame and likes can be very costly in terms of money, time, and mental health. Of course there are some very successful influencers who have created a lucrative cash flow through endorsements and advertising but not everyone can or will reach that status. You probably follow some people on social media that post almost daily with content that is shallow and meaningless, all in race to be famous and relevant. These people may generating likes but not income.

If you have a skill or information that can benefit others who are willing to pay for what you have to offer, you can have a lucrative career online. Social media can be a fun and interactive tool to learn and meet new people but it can also be very damaging to your mental and emotional health. If what you are doing on social media is not contributing to your income, you should not spend hours of your day engaging in it. We all need some time away from the stresses of our jobs and home life, and watching a few Tik Tok videos can be a good distraction but ask yourself, ‘Is this enriching my life?’, ‘Is this going to help me pay my bills?’ Likes and followers will almost never help pay your bills. Wouldn’t you rather be debt-free and have all your needs met?

Beware of the smoke and mirrors!

It’s ok to seek a career in the public eye as long as it is financially enhancing your life in some way. Make goals for yourself that will benefit you in the future instead of what gives you momentary satisfaction like, owning a home, paying off debt, and setting yourself up for retirement. You would be surprised to see how people are REALLY living outside of the social platforms. It’s smoke and mirrors. Set yourself up for success and if fame comes with it, great, but if fame is your only goal, you will more than likely not create a stable life for yourself. At the end of the day, wouldn’t you rather have a home and financial security than have thousands of followers and likes on social media as you share an apartment with roommates or your parents????

Being famous does not make you a Success.
